DIY Paper Clips: Valentine Your Planner

January 29, 2024      Leave a Comment

I won’t say that I can’t believe we are at the end of January and it’s almost February.

While time continues to move quickly I am really excited for Valentine’s Day. Not so much the day itself but I love pink and I love hearts so it’s so much fun to decorate and craft this month.

Today I am sharing some really simple paper clips you can make to decorate your planner, journal or Bible.

These are simple to make, use up scraps and would be a fun project to do with kids or to make as teacher or gifts for Galentines Day so let’s get started!

Supplies:  Cardstock (scraps are fine you just need it big enough to make your heart shape). Then you will want some scraps of fabric or paper, a glue stick-something strong and permanent. I would have used Tacky Glue if I had some. Then some embroidery floss, a needle and thread and lastly some fleece or felt and a marker and some stuffing.

Let’s get started!

I began by cutting a simple heart shape from my cardstock. When I was happy with it I made a second one by tracing the first. Then I started adding strips of my scrap fabric. You can use one whole piece of fabric, an image-whatever you like! I decorated both sides then I sewed around one with regular thread adding my paper clip and sewing it into place, and another I used embroidery floss. You could hot glue everything together as well but I didn’t feel like getting hot the glue gun.

The last style I made was a cute fleece heart. I cut out the heart shape the same way, duplicated it and stiched on the features with embroidery floss. I did 3 lines for each eye with a long one in the center and shorter ones on either side. I added eyebrows and a mouth as well. Just be aware if you are using thinner fabric that your embroidery floss might show behind the fabric so you may want to do each feature, knot if off and start again rather than stretching the floss from one part of the face to the other.

I used a blanket stitch to attach the two hearts and added some toy stuffing and the paper clip. The last addition was a cute bow-my daugther’s idea-with some more fabric scraps. You could make it out of ribbon too which would adorable too.

I made a quick paper clip with a piece of scrap ribbon tied into a little flag. I love making these and adding them to my Bible and journals-it is a really quick way to add color and you can make them to coordinate to any theme. A big plus is it’s a great way to use little bits of fabric.

And that’s it! These look so sweet and I am hoping to make a few more. If you make some please tag me on social media or put a link in the description below. Happy crafting!

Book Haul: First Used Book Purchase of 2024

January 23, 2024      Leave a Comment

Welcome to Book Club. I hope your reading year is off to a great start. I have already fallen in love with a book that has completely ruined all other books for me. I’ll be sharing more about it in my January reads but I am excited to find some more books by this author.

I also placed a Thrift Books purchase (affiliate link-if you use this link you can earn a free book and so can I 🙂 The books pretty much all came from a videos I watched on OceanaGottaReademAll’s channel but I thought it might be fun to share with you as well. So here we go!

First up is Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard which is book 1 in a series and you know how much I love a series! Here is the synopsis from Goodreads:

“This is a world divided by blood—red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance—Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.”

It sounds like a really interesting read. I’m not quite sure when I will get to it. I wonder if you have a TBR shelf? I’m thinking about organizing my books a bit more but for now this one will stay stacked with it’s other newly acquired siblings.

“The Bridge of Belle Island” by Julie Klassen is the next purchase I made. I am not really a romance reader but I do love historical fiction so I thought I would give this one a try. Here’s the Goodreads synopsis:

“After a humiliating mistake, lawyer Benjamin Booker resolves to never again trust a beautiful woman. When an old friend is killed, the senior partner isn’t satisfied with Bow Street’s efforts and asks Benjamin to investigate. Eager to leave London for a while, Benjamin agrees. Evidence takes him to a remote island on the Thames, a world unto itself, shrouded in mist and mystery. Soon he finds himself falling for the main suspect—a woman who claims not to have left the island in ten years. But should he trust her?

On Belle Island, Isabelle feels safe and leads a productive life, but fear keeps her trapped there. When Mr. Booker arrives with news of her trustee’s murder in London, Isabelle is stunned. She has not left the island, yet she has a recurring dream about the man’s death. Or is it a memory? She had been furious with him, but she never intended…this.

When a second person dies, and evidence shockingly points to her, Isabelle doesn’t know who to trust: the attractive lawyer or the admirer and friends who assemble on the island, each with grudges against the victim. Can she even trust her own mind? While they search for the truth, secrets come to light and danger comes calling.”

Then I picked up “Husband Auditions” by Angela Ruth Strong. Again, not really a romance reader but this book seemed to have enough of a story line beyond the inevitable romance angle that I feel like it might be an interesting read. Here’s the synopsis:

“In a world full of happily-ever-after love, Meri Newberg feels like the last young woman on the planet to be single, at least in her Christian friend group. So when she’s handed a strange present at the latest wedding–a 1950s magazine article of “ways to get a husband”–she decides there’s nothing to lose by trying out its advice. After all, she can’t get any more single, can she?

Her brother’s roommate sees the whole thing as a great opportunity. Not to fall in love–Kai Kamaka has no interest in the effort a serious relationship takes. No, this is a career jump start. He talks Meri into letting him film every silly husband-catching attempt for a new online show. If it goes viral, his career as a cameraman will be made.

When Meri Me debuts, it’s an instant hit. People love watching her lasso men on street corners, drop handkerchiefs for unsuspecting potential beaus, and otherwise embarrass herself in pursuit of true love. But the longer this game goes on, the less sure Kai is that he wants Meri to snag anyone but him. The only problem is that he may not be the kind of husband material she’s looking for . . .

With droll comic timing, unbeatable chemistry, and a zany but relatable cast of characters, Angela Ruth Strong has created a heartfelt look at the reality of modern Christian dating that readers will both resonate with and fall for.”

I also picked up “The Soulmate” by Sally Hepworth.

“There’s a cottage on a cliff. Gabe and Pippa’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after night Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge. Until he doesn’t.

When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral…Did the victim jump? Was she pushed?

And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate…lie? As the perfect facade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel.”

And lastly I picked up “Drawing & Painting Expressive Little Faces” by Amarilys Henderson. I am really focusing on my art this year and drawing faces is part of that. I have had this book on my wish list for a while and when I saw it on Thrift Books I had to pick it up.

“In Drawing and Painting Expressive Little Faces, artist and popular Skillshare instructor Amarilys Henderson shares her practical and creative techniques for drawing and painting faces with style and personality.

Gathering supplies. Consider the creative possibilities of watercolor, ink, and markers, and create a mobile sketch pack so you can capture faces and expressions on the go.

Checking in with My 2024 Goals: Weekly Plan with Me

January 22, 2024      Leave a Comment

In this week’s plan with me I am re-visiting the goals I set at the beginning of January to see what’s working and what is not.

I started off with 3 priorities this month. The first one was to be awake at 7am and to be doing more movement and stretching. If you have been around here a bit you may know I am a night owl and being up and active at 7am isn’t a strength of mine. Still, it’s something I would like to move towards so I decided to keep it on my list for now.

My second goal was to post more consistently-day and time of posting-here on the blog and my channels. I have done pretty well this past week and it’s something I want to keep focusing on. Although as I am writing this blog post a tad bit later than what I would call “consistent” it’s also important to understand that life happens!

The third focus was daily writing and editing. This is meant for my fiction writing and not my blog writing and I am still struggling with forging this habit. It is important to me so I am going to keep focusing on building this habit.

I like to think of these priorities as my ideal and any step I take towards them is a win for me. I may not be writing consistently but I have cleared my desk that had become a mess and made a beautiful space to write.

In the end I kept my priorities the same and then I set about doing my decorating and adding the appointments and “to-do’s” for the week. Once I did that I went through and added my content for the week and also created my new tracker. I ended up abandoning my time blocking for this week since it wasn’t working and I will see if I want to bring it back next week.

So that is my planning for the week. I would love to hear how you check in with your plans so please feel free to comment below.

Until next time…

Bible Journal Process Video

January 19, 2024      Leave a Comment

Today I thought it would be fun to record my latest bible journaling and I thought you might enjoy coming along with me.

The Bible I am using in this video is an ESV version and you can find the same one here. I received mine from my church but it’s one of my favorite Bibles. I admit to struggling when it comes to making art in my Bible but I am slowly starting to relax and just enjoy the reading and then adding color, texture, ribbons and washi.

Today I did more art than I normally due. I usually sit down and read for a bit highlighting passages with my colored pencils. I love using colored pencils because they don’t bleed through the pages. I have tried a few highlighters meant for Bibles but they always bleed through.

Today, before I opened my Bible I decided to just randomly pull out some items from stash. I had journaling cards, die cuts, stickers, washi and my favorite tempura paint sticks. If have been around a while you know how much I love these! They are paint in a stick and they dry quickly. Today I used them as a gesso of sort to cover up the study notes on my page so I could add some other elements.

I really had fun with this page and it didn’t require any artistic skill on my part.

I added color and flowers and I copied down 2 verses. Overall it was a really nice practice.

If you would like to spend some time in your Bible with me you can watch the video below and journal along.

I hope this inspires you to delved into the Word in a fun and colorful way. A way that feels like you.

Until next time…

My 2024 Journal Line Up

January 17, 2024      Leave a Comment

I have taken a new approach to what I focus my attention on. Taking time to not pick things that sound good or fun but that are supportive of the big things I am looking to call into each day.

The truth is I have countless ideas. Countless projects I would love to work on. Sadly, as a human being my limitation lies in the realms of time and energy. While I am grateful to almost never be bored I am also easily distracted by ideas.

When I sat down to curate this years journals I wanted to make sure I was picking practices that support what I am working towards and how I want to spend my days. I feel good about the line up I have but I am also planning to re-evaluate everything as the year goes and to not be afraid to cut things out or maybe add in something new.

So here are my current journals for this year.

First up is my 5 year journal. I saw this video and loved the idea. I have kept a small journal where I write down just a few things from the day before but I loved the idea of having one book for 5 years. I picked up this journal which is going to be short a few pages but that I thought would work well for this practice. I also decided to make a cover for it to dress it up a little. I followed a great tutorial from Pin Cut Sew that you can find here if you want to make your own.

Next up is my catch all journal. This was originally going to be a bullet journal until I realized, again, that while I love watching videos of people and their bullet journals that type of planning doesn’t work for me. So I ended up repurposing this journal into a catch all.  A place where I can write out ideas, work through plans, make lists-whatever comes to mind. I have no preciousness about this journal, I scribble in it and I absolutely love it! I got this journal as a 2-pack (the same pack I used for my current reading journal) and I am so happy with it.

Next is what I think of as my morning pages journal but really I write in it whenever. It’s the journal where my thoughts and everything I am going through gets written down. I have a cover I purchased years ago off of Etsy and I refill it with blank journals when it’s full. I love writing in this but it’s one of the practices that once I fall out of it is so hard to get back into. I often will write in it on our patio under the tent during the spring and summer and it makes me so happy. I really want to bring this practice back to help me with my writing goals.

Next is my “Be Still Journal” which is a book I created for my prayer practice. It holds space for daily prayers, verse of the day, words God has spoken to you along with blank journaling space. I plan to list a few in my shop along with some handmade goodies but in the meantime you can purchase your own here if you wanted.

Then I have 2 sketchbooks that are part of the year-long art class I am taking with Carla Sonheim. These will be where I work through the different assignments throughout the year.

Last up is this big and beautiful sketchbook that I purchased originally for the class but then decided I wanted to do something else with it. I have no idea what that something else will be but I feel like I want to make it part of a daily art practice. I am giving some space to this one to see what unfolds and I’ll be sure to share with you once I’m done.

And of course the last one, which I forget to mention in the video, is my Reading Journal which I shared with you yesterday.

I hope you enjoyed this little look into the journals I have picked out for the year. I do plan on sharing them with you as the year goes on and if you would like to know more about any one in particular just put a comment below.

Until next time…

My 2024 Reading Journal

January 16, 2024      Leave a Comment

I am really excited to share with you my new reading journal.

The idea of a reading journal never really occurred to me. I have kept a list of all the books I read each year for a while but I never did more than that. I made a reading journal last year sometime but never did anything beyond that so when I went down the rabbit hole of seeing all these beautiful reading journals people were creating I felt completely overwhelmed.

Thankfully I came to my senses and decided to make a journal that fit with who I am and would capture things that were fun to me in an easy, no pressure way.

I ordered this journal off of Amazon originally to be a writing journal and quickly realized it wouldn’t work for that purpose and how I write. Instead I decided to cover up what I had already written with some 0ld papers in my stash and to add some washing and create a few pages of things I wanted to track in 2024

First up is my reading goal of 70 books read this year. I increased my goal based on what I actually read in 2023 and I feel pretty confident that I will be able to read that many. I’m thinking the first page might be used for books covers of what I read.

Then I added a page to just write out the books that I read. I would love to print out the covers but at least if I write them down I have them listed and I can always go back and print off the covers at another time.

I also added a “books acquired” page to my journal. This page is going to be books I buy or pick up from the Little Free Library. It will be fun to see how many new books join my collection in 2024 and where they come from.

Then I added a page for all the books I borrow from the library in 2024. I know this can also be tracked digitally but I like written records and I am curious to see how many books I borrow this year.

Next up is a list of all the books from the Agatha Christie Mystery Challenge from the 52 Book Club. Along with their 2024 Reading Challenge. I thought this would be a good way to help choose what book to read next if I’m not sure or another challenge I might like to take part in. It’s a bit redundant but I also included a list of all the Miss Marple books. I have never read any of those stories so it seemed like a fun list to keep.

And that is all I added. I like the idea of having lots of open space for things to come and I’m considering a monthly round up of what I read that month but I want to keep it easy and fun so I can keep up with it.

How about you have you ever kept a reading journal? Are you doing one this year? I would love to hear about it!

Until next time…

-Michele, aka The Dreaming Dilettante
